UPDATE -- HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR MCCAIN -- Knowing What He Knows Now Obama Would Still Oppose Surge -- All In For Defeat I Guess

Update:  This could be a HUGE opportunity for McCain!

McCain is comfortable making jokes about his age, how about this one:

"Wow, I though the old guy was supposed to be stuck in his ways in spite of the evidence.  Next Obama will be telling us to get off his lawn and turn that damn music down!"

Well, this presents McCain with an opportunity to frame Obama for the rest of the campaign as a staid, inflexible fool who can't seem to understand that the world doesn't revolve around his failed, inflexible policies!  It also covers McCain for changing his mind on drilling.

It hits at the premise that judgment is not just riding one decision 6 years ago but one has to have the wisdom to adjust to the changing world!
---------------------------------- End Update ------------------------------------

Special Report reported on the question asked to Obama.  His answer was useless but basically said he would still oppose the surge.  See if you can make sense of it:

Update -- here is the text of the exchange:
Q: If you had to do it over again, knowing what you know now, would you support the surge?
A: No, because, keep in mind that…
Q: You wouldn’t?
A: Keep in mind… These kinds of hypotheticals are very difficult. Hindsight is 20/20. But I think that, what I’m absolutely convinced of, is that at that time we had to change the political debate because the view of the Bush administration at that time was one that I just disagreed with.

Additional -- Obama wouldn't be able to go sans flak jacket if it weren't for the surge.

RAND SIMBERG ON CALLS FOR an Apollo-like energy program. "It’s an understandable appeal, but it betrays a certain lack of understanding of the problem to think that we will solve it with a crash federal program, at least if it’s one modeled on Apollo. . . . Which is why John McCain’s idea of a prize for more efficient electric car batteries is a good step in the right direction. I would argue, though, that it is still too specific."

Foolish Choices Endanger Our Superiority In Space

NASA has to buy used spacecraft.

The next president will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first landing of man on the moon. There will be great self-congratulations by a generation that has squandered a two-generation lead in space and aeronautics.

The truer tale is not that we landed there first, but that it has been 35 years since we last landed on the moon.

Instead of advancing science, we wasted billions if not trillions on welfare payments and other social programs that have undermined society.

Like Eric the Red visiting Nova Scotia 1,000 years ago, we came, we saw, we shrugged our shoulders and went home.

Now we are reduced to this:

The US space agency, NASA, is reportedly negotiating the purchase of unmanned Japanese transfer spacecraft to replace its own aging shuttles.

Through Objective European Eyes -- Dares Question Obama's Appeal

However, this question must be asked: how much political savvy do those who celebrate Obama, a man who hasn't yet had to accept any great responsibilities, really have? Obama is often praised for rekindling enthusiasm in democracy in people due to his drawing power. But mass obeisance to a charismatic leader really has little to do with democracy. On the contrary, the sociologist Max Weber describes charismatic domination as a condition that gains no legitimacy either through elections or tradition. The Obama-hype is similar to the month-long dance around the iPhone, except that the Apple cell phone will still have to submit to field trials.

One of Obama's central messages is his distance from The Establishment, from the usual political scheming, from the deals of the political class. This promise, one that is naturally impossible to separate from every-day presidential life, also falls on open ears in Europe. Surveys regularly show that people are tired of political squabbling and the cumbersome search for compromise. A presidential anti-politician like Horst Köhler draws his popularity from the fact that he can call for or reject reforms without responsibility for day-to-day politics.

Ten Years To Get Oil -- My ASS!

A Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst said in a report there is a lot of offshore crude that can be produced relatively quickly. The problem: It is located off California, where politicians have built careers opposing new drilling.

The Minerals Management Service said that of the estimated 18 billion barrels of oil in off-limits coastal areas, almost 10 billion are off the coast of California.

"California could actually start producing new oil within a year if the moratorium were lifted," the Sanford C. Bernstein report said, because the oil is under shallow water, has been explored and drilling platforms have been there since before the moratoria.

Why The Debate Matters -- Global Warming The Multi Trillion Dollar Religion

I DEVOTED six years to carbon accounting, building models for the Australian Greenhouse Office. I am the rocket scientist who wrote the carbon accounting model (FullCAM) that measures Australia's compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, in the land use change and forestry sector.

FullCAM models carbon flows in plants, mulch, debris, soils and agricultural products, using inputs such as climate data, plant physiology and satellite data. I've been following the global warming debate closely for years.

When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the old ice core data, no other suspects.

The evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we were certain when it appeared we needed to act quickly? Soon government and the scientific community were working together and lots of science research jobs were created. We scientists had political support, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet.

But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

There has not been a public debate about the causes of global warming and most of the public and our decision makers are not aware of the most basic salient facts.

Here is what he means by facts:

1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.

Each possible cause of global warming has a different pattern of where in the planet the warming occurs first and the most. The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics. We have been measuring the atmosphere for decades using radiosondes: weather balloons with thermometers that radio back the temperature as the balloon ascends through the atmosphere. They show no hot spot. Whatsoever.

If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. So we know for sure that carbon emissions are not a significant cause of the global warming. ...

2. There is no evidence to support the idea that carbon emissions cause significant global warming. None. ...

3. The satellites that measure the world's temperature all say that the warming trend ended in 2001, and that the temperature has dropped about 0.6C in the past year (to the temperature of 1980). ...

4. The new ice cores show that in the past six global warmings over the past half a million years, the temperature rises occurred on average 800 years before the accompanying rise in atmospheric carbon. Which says something important about which was cause and which was effect. ...

The last point was known and past dispute by 2003, yet Al Gore made his movie in 2005 and presented the ice cores as the sole reason for believing that carbon emissions cause global warming. In any other political context our cynical and experienced press corps would surely have called this dishonest and widely questioned the politician's assertion. ..

What is going to happen over the next decade as global temperatures continue not to rise? The Labor Government is about to deliberately wreck the economy in order to reduce carbon emissions. If the reasons later turn out to be bogus, the electorate is not going to re-elect a Labor government for a long time. When it comes to light that the carbon scare was known to be bogus in 2008, the ALP is going to be regarded as criminally negligent or ideologically stupid for not having seen through it.

Worldwide, violence continues to decline, as it has for the last few years. Violence has also greatly diminished, or disappeared completely, in places like Iraq, Nepal, Chechnya, Congo, Indonesia and Burundi. Even Afghanistan, touted as the new war zone, is seeing less violence this year than last.  All this continues a trend that began when the Cold War ended, and the Soviet Union no longer subsidized terrorist and rebel groups everywhere.

Is Our Obama Learning -- Barack Fails Presidential Math

"(T)he objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to 10 years. . . ."
That would be the vaunted Barack Obama describing why he is on his Rainbow Tour.

He would do better to spend a few days studying the constitution and brushing up on his math so he can recall the length of a President's term, the maximum terms allowed, and how many years that is total(hint: 4 and 2 -- you do the math).

Maybe he can get the 58 states he campaigned in for the primary to repeal 22nd amendment!

The Dark Knight -- Destroys Movie History -- Brings Hollywood Along For Ride

Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box-office superheroes.

"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.

Hollywood set an overall revenue record of $253 million for a three-day weekend, beating the $218.4 million haul over the weekend of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers. (AP)

B-52 Crashes Off Guam

Rescue crews were searching a vast area of floating debris and a sheen of oil Monday for crew members of an Air Force B-52 bomber that crashed off the island of Guam, officials said.

At least two people were recovered from the waters, but their condition was not immediately available, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Six vessels, three helicopters, two F-15 fighter jets and a B-52 bomber were involved in the search, which had covered about 70 square miles of ocean, Coast Guard spokeswoman Lt. Elizabeth Buendia said.

"We have an active search that's going to go on throughout the night," she said Monday. The Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and local fire and police departments were involved.

The B-52 bomber based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana was en route to conduct a flyover in a parade when it crashed around about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor, the Air Force said.

The Obama Rainbow Tour -- Day 2, Iraq

There you are, I told you so
Makes no difference where she goes

And who would underestimate the actress now?

Evita - Rainbow Tour

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was in Iraq on Monday for talks with local leaders and US commanders, after pledging to pull out US troops in 16 months if he takes over the White House next year.

He will meet Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, President Jalal Talabani and senior US military commanders, Iraqi and US officials said.

"Senator Barack Obama arrived in Iraq this morning as part of a Congressional delegation, along with Senators Jack Reed and Chuck Hagel," embassy spokesman Armand Cucciniello said.

...
Obama's camp has said the aim of his tour is to make an on-the-ground assessment of the war in Iraq and to meet the country's leaders, whom he has criticised for not doing enough to rebuild their country.

"Iraq's leaders have failed to invest tens of billions of dollars in oil revenues in rebuilding their own country, and they have not reached the political accommodation that was the stated purpose of the (US troop) surge," Obama wrote on July 14 in The New York Times.

Obama also confirmed his pledge to declare an end to the Iraq war from the first day of his presidency if he wins in November, and to withdraw most US combat troops within 16 months.

Residents of Baghdad's Sadr City, the stronghold of anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, were sceptical of Obama's plans.

"This proclamation is a mere political stunt," said Abu Ali, 43. "The American policy would not change with the change in the president, especially the military policy which is planned by far-sighted commanders."
Wait, did this guy just call Evi, er um, Obama short sighted?  Even Abu gets it!
